The John B. Smith and Sons Ltd. Mill was the most iconic Callander saw mill because it operated the longest and for many years was the largest employer. Beginning in 1851 as a grocery store with a small lumber business in Toronto, they began logging in the Camp Borden area and owned mills in Angus. After the pine was depleted, they moved to Frank's Bay on Lake Nipissing. By 1888 they had built their first mill in Callander and lumber was towed from Frank's Bay and Temagami to the mill by way of the Sturgeon River. There were three versions of the mill: the 1888 version produced timbers for the Grand Trunk Railway bridges and railway cards before burning down in 1894; the second version was rebuilt immediately approximately 1400 feet to the west and then burned down on May 20th, 1934 only a week before the birth of the Dionne quintuplets; and the third version was rebuilt that same year. The mill closed for good in 1967. |
